Today is my birthday, and I was looking for something that really inspired me. In my search for The Thing, I (happily) stumbled across the social media of Patricia Fox, A.K.A. Purely Patricia. Initially, I thought Fox was an alter ego of Patricia Arquette, who I adore (and who Fox often resembles, albeit a bit older). When the Advanced Style book and blog came out, apparently Fox and Iris Apfel fought hard to be the face of the project. While Apfel ultimately won the title, Fox didn’t let that slow her down. She describes herself as a maximalist, a fashion muse, a lifestyle influencer, and a fashionista of the highest order, and I can’t find fault with those labels.
Fox was initially inspired by her equally-fashionable mother who used fashion as a way to emulate famous female figures with whom she was obsessed. Those obsessions included icons like Queen Elizabeth, Jacqueline Kennedy, and Elizabeth Taylor. While Patricia Fox certainly isn’t dressing like anyone else, she’s taken her mom’s confidence and individuality to a new level, not because she’s so daring, but because she’s so darned good at making things that don’t belong together work somehow. I don’t say this often, but I believe she is a fashion genius.
Fox is adamant that her photos mustn’t be used without permission, so rather than giving you an eye-full, I’m just going to embed some of her TikTok content below. If you have the time, I promise you that an exploration of her website and social media is an absolute joy. Fox’s tagline “Nothing matches and everything goes!” is a perfect way to sum up her style and what I can only call her art. I have been getting way too comfortable with monochrome looks and solids (and sneakers), but I’m going to take this year to try to get in touch with my inner Patricia Fox. I do have one question, though. HOW BIG IS HER APARTMENT?
