Remember when you were a kids and believed that the future would look like some combination of Lost in Space, Star Trek, and Tron? My daydreams ot the future were a little more old school. I saw Fritz Lang’s Metropolis when I was very young, probably 8 or 9, and it was a real watershed moment for me. While I may have missed the dystopian message, 1927’s version of the future, at least from a design perspective, certainly left its mark. I was and am still obsessed with the film’s costumes and sets, and it started me on my life-long love of Deco design.
The son of a ceramic sculptor from Barcelona, designer Boyd Baten uses the Art Deco lines I love to create beautiful, memorable wearable pieces. His Etsy store Divamp is full of stunning pieces worked in PVC and leather, and while they’re likely rooted in fetish, they can’t help but be elevated to art. I wish he would have a gallery show in New York so I could go see these fantastical futuristic creations in person.

Fritz Lang. Yes! I see the connection. You’ve made me want to go back and watch Metropolis again.

You should. I’m partial to the eighties version with the Giorgio Moroder soundtrack.

Fritz Lang’s niece was a good friend of ours (and our babysitter) she swore she had never seen Metropolis and resisted all our attempts to persuade her to do so. Great post, where are my 21st century anti gravity boots though. (I guess we did get the hand held TV phones.)

They’d also look super cool in those see-through elevators in the Marriot Marquis!
