As in love with both performing arts and visual arts as I am, I’m sure I don’t have to tell you how intrigued I am by puppetry. So when I came across this beautiful demonstration of how Joey, the horse puppet from War Horse on Broadway, is brought to life, I just had to share.
It takes three people to animate him, and each has very specific jobs, but they’re not what you’d think. I especially love how each of the puppeteers, the head, the heart, and the hind, have their own motivation, their own “emotional indicators.” I am especially intrigued by how well they work together to create such a powerful illusion.
I hope this lovely performance thrills and fascinates you as much as it did me.
