I am quite vain about my gift giving, but this guy has me beat hands down. Photographer Ernst Berlin wanted the perfect gift for his wife. He happened upon a subreddit called Reddit Gets Drawn, and an idea began to form. Similar to the app, French Girls, about which I wrote a couple of months ago, Reddit Gets Drawn allows people to post their photos and ask others to draw them.

He got a huge response to his request. “Twenty-three replied. It was more than I expected, but I loved all their previous work so I couldn’t say no.” So he sent all 23 artists a link to an album of 38 of his family pictures featuring his wife, their baby Jacob, and himself. The drawings he was sent are are startling in their diversity of style and tone, but they’re all fascinating.

On her birthday, Ernst sent his wife to a spa so he’d have time to arrange the surprise. Her reaction was gratifyingly adorable.
