What if you spent every day looking for One Beautiful Thing?

The Wexford Carol and Some Cute Boys From England

merryMerry Christmas to all who celebrate, and a very happy Thursday to everyone else!

During my most recent search for classical Christmas music, I came upon this ethereal beauty, which I am very pleased to share with you. A 12th(ish) century Irish song, “The Wexford Carol” hails from Enniscorthy in County Wexford. The song is hauntingly beautiful, Alison Krauss always makes me happy, and her collaboration with Yo-Yo Ma is really remarkable. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Note: I don’t typically dedicate posts to particular people, but the truth is that today’s blog was inspired by the lovely Barbara from Amelia County who made me feel really great yesterday. Thank you for your kindness!

And in case that’s too classical for your tastes, here’s some more popular ear candy! It’s one of the University of Oxford’s A Capella groups, Out of the Blue, and they’re completely adorable. Their vocal prowess is impressive, but most enjoyable is their wonderful chemistry, their complete unselfconsciousness, and their preciously awkward dancing. It’s also a great opportunity to play “Gay, Straight, or European.” (Hint: They’re European)

  1. I took a break from blogging for a few days and just sat down this morning to see what was waiting for me. And here, waiting for me is this One Beautiful song! You have no idea how perfectly this suits me. Alison Krauss in any form or fashion, right? And Yo-Yo with Cello. Thank you!!!!

      • And I will be adding this heavenly song to the list in just a short while. You couldn’t know, but the cello is my favorite musical instrument and I adore Allison Krauss. So, really, Thank You!
I have a song suggestion for you, by the way. Have you heard “Mary” by Patty Griffin? If not, please go listen. Somebody sent it to me as a Christmas song, but I think it’s actually more appropriate to Easter. In any event, it is a stunner.

      • Just listened. It’s beautiful! Thank you for the recommendation! (Although the lyric “you’re covered in babies” creeped me out a bit.)

      • That line, and a few others, make me think of it as more of an Easter song, if there is such a thing. There’s a version on YouTube where Natalie Maines joins Patty. Wow.
