Outings Project

I’ve just stumbled upon an ephemeral street art project that I am loving, and it’s something to which we can all contribute. It’s called The Outings Project, and the process is simple. You go to a museum, take a picture of a lesser-known or anonymous portrait in a frame, then print it out large, cut out just the figure, and using paper paste, stick it in an unlikely spot on the street. Then you take pictures of your relocated portrait and send them to the project for inclusion on their site. They’ll even help with the printing of the images if you like.

Creator Julien de Casabianca refers to the process as setting the portraits free. He sees it as a way to get forgotten artists and unloved subjects out into the world, and also a way to bring art to people who wouldn’t normally seek it out in museums and galleries. I think it’s wonderful, and I can’t wait to try it!

What a neat idea. And the images seen were so captivating.bthey certainly would have caused me to stop and wonder who they were and how they got there

Now those are quite beautiful. I wish I was there to feel the stony textures myself.

If only all the graffiti in Los Angeles looked like these paintings, we wouldn’t have to spend millions of dollars to remove it and spend the money to help the needy.
    Thanks for sharing.

I’m sure there is some sort of intellectual property breach at play here but I love the public and participatory art concept at play here!
