The Coney Island Mermaid Parade is just four weeks away, so I thought a Coney-themed OBT was in order. It pains me to admit that I took the place for granted for most of my life. It wasn’t until my first Mermaid Parade in 2005 (thank you, Jess and Nick!) that I really began to appreciate Coney Island.
We’ve been in many Mermaid Parades since, but this year will be my first one since Hurricane Sandy left both Coney Island and us devastated. It’s been a long, difficult road back, but I’m finally ready to take the mermaid plunge again!
In case you don’t know the place, here are a few photos and one nutty vintage video to get you started!

My grandparents grew up in the city during the 30s and 40s and have many fond memories of visits to Coney Island.

That must have been so cool! The place has really changed a lot over the last few decades, but it manages to retain it’s wonderful weirdness.

It was just a hop and skip from Jersey so this brings back many memories, Donna! Have a blast this weekend!

Thanks! I did have a blast (though I also had no signal). Hope you did, too!

Isn’t (old) Coney Island at night spectacular? Luna Park, Steeplechase, the Parachute Jump. So romantic!
This little video showed the stomach churning bizarre “amusements” I recall as a kid, like tumbling through an open revolving drum or getting thrown off a huge spinning plate + crashing into people. Life before Disneyland….. :-))

I was really amazed by how crazy some of those old rides looked! It’s a wonder more people weren’t maimed or killed on them!

It really does manage to be kind of magical, while also being a bit seedy and odd at the same time. Charming is how I’d describe it. You should go!
