What if you spent every day looking for One Beautiful Thing?

But When I Call (On My Flip Phone)

Adele kills it. Again. This time with a flip phone.

This can hardly be considered a music discovery post, since Adele’s new single “Hello,” released last Friday, had more than 25 million hits on its first day. But on the off-chance that you haven’t yet heard it, I had to share. It’s the first single she’s dropped in three years, and I honestly think it was well worth the wait.

The video is quite beautiful. Our girl has clearly lost some weight, and while I don’t think she needed to, she’s even more stunning than she was before. The song is an attempt to reconnect with an ex, and it’s spectacularly shot and performed. As it happens, it’s the first ever music video to be shot in Imax. But as brilliant as her performance and the video and her new look are, what I really want to talk about are Adele’s lyrics. They are mature and thoughtful and lovely, and they strike me as particularly genuine. The poetry feels very private; like we’re listening in on Adele’s private 3 AM thoughts.

Watch the video first, but take the time to read her stunning lyrics below.

Hello, it’s me
I was wondering if after all these years you’d like to meet
To go over everything
They say that time’s supposed to heal ya, but I ain’t done much healing

Hello, can you hear me?
I’m in California dreaming about who we used to be
When we were younger and free
I’ve forgotten how it felt before the world fell at our feet

There’s such a difference between us
And a million miles

Hello from the other side
I must’ve called a thousand times
To tell you I’m sorry for everything that I’ve done
But when I call you never seem to be home

Hello from the outside
At least I can say that I’ve tried
To tell you I’m sorry for breaking your heart
But it don’t matter, it clearly doesn’t tear you apart
Anymore

Hello, how are you?
It’s so typical of me to talk about myself, I’m sorry
I hope that you’re well
Did you ever make it out of that town where nothing ever happened?

It’s no secret that the both of us
Are running out of time

So hello from the other side
I must’ve called a thousand times
To tell you I’m sorry for everything that I’ve done
But when I call you never seem to be home

Hello from the outside
At least I can say that I’ve tried
To tell you I’m sorry for breaking your heart
But it don’t matter, it clearly doesn’t tear you apart
Anymore

  3. I’m just glad that high school girls have a new song to sing at variety shows.
Fun fact: the video was shot about an hour from where I live.
