Do you remember after dinner mints? The kind they’d have in a big, unsanitary, cut-glass bowl next to the register in diners in the sixties and seventies? I loved those things, and these photos remind me of those colors.
Matt Krump’s candy-colored minimalist photos of vintage signs are the subject of today’s post, and I’m in love! I can’t get enough of those colors, especially at this time of year. They look like summer. Weirdly, I couldn’t find out much about the photographer except that his photos, while not always of signage, do all bear his signature colors. If I learn more, I’ll post it here.
In the meantime, look! Pretty colors!

I loved those mints too, and also your sign colors. We travel to Jamaica and what do I love most…the colors of the houses.

I think I’m in love with Lucy the chicken lady.

Nonsense. You just take the opportunity for a bird joke when you find it!

Great images. The colours are definitely summery. They make me think of ice cream sundaes. I like the compositions too and the use of negative space. My husband would love the In and Out burger one as he eats there every time he’s sent to California for work.

You’re right. Their negative space is as interesting as their subjects. And those colors!

I love these signs! As I have made the drive from Atlanta to Nashville repeatedly over the last thirty years, I have watched places come and go, but the signs remain as landmarks of my trip home. Thanks so much for sharing this.

I’ll bet that’s a fun drive! Maybe you should take your own pictures before your landmarks disappear entirely. Thanks for visiting and commenting!

There was a time when design was so important. These photos are an amazing display of that. Since I know you like the show one, is it for a shoe store or something else?

I honestly don’t know, but you are right that I absolutely loved it! I assume it was a shoe store. What else could it be? Kickboxing studio? Podiatrist? Foot fetish club?

Somebody told me a lot of the signs were photographed in Austin. I will have to add them to the tour when I finally make it there!

I concur with Joseph. I love Lucy also.
Lucy would make a fabulous tattoo.
The pictures could be straight out of “The long long trailer”.

Yup, he’s from Austin and several of these are taken in Austin but the shoe is from his Vegas series. http://mattcrump.com/ (I didn’t just know that. I looked it up because I wanted to know. I didn’t remember ever seeing the shoe here.)
By the way, Lucy’s is a great place to eat. It’s one of my favorite places to go after I work out on Saturday morning because I can justify splitting the fried things with friends and their Cobb salad is perfect.
