Geert Weggen
Geert Weggen shoots squirrels from his kitchen window, but not in the way that you’d think. When he chose the site for his house, he realized how much wildlife would be passing by its windows, and he got a brilliant idea.
“I started building a house with an open outside studio where wild animals can freely come. This studio is build 1 meter from the ground and is directly connected with my kitchen window. This is how I make compositions on an eye level, 3 meters from my window.”
He sets up tiny props and scenes, then he uses food to lure his subjects into the space. The photos he gets are remarkable, and he claims the props are practical and not photoshopped in after the fact. Also, the way he tells it, the red squirrels are entirely wild, though there is a picture at the bottom of him approaching a totally unfazed squirrel, so maybe his definition of “wild” is a bit different from mine.
Nonetheless, the photos are charming, and now I want a red squirrel for a pet!
Epilogue: After reading about his process, I walked around my house, trying to find a vantage point from which I could photograph beautiful wildlife. I finally concluded that I could get a good vantage point of the neighborhood feral cats pooping in the alley between houses. Not quite the same thing, though, is it?

They are almost painfully cute. I love those crazy tufts on the ears that make them look perpetually surprised!

These images are deliriously charming and delightful with a glitter sprinkle of magic thrown in to the mix. Incidentally, while I am sure his local squirrels have become accustomed to him and are therefore somewhat domesticated around him and his equipment, it has been my experience that red squirrels are docile, timid, inquisitive and playful so I should not imagine they require much encouragement to explore the props.

That’s good to know, since I am now dreaming of finding one and making it my own! Of course, we don’t have any near me, but I won’t let that stop me!

In Britain, they only survive in small pockets, having been ousted by the non-native grey squirrels over a lengthy period of time. Happily, where we used to live in Argyll is one of their preserves. We used to see them quite often around town and in our garden. I also worked for a while in the middle of some woodland and I was guaranteed to see dozens of red squirrels when there. They all let me get pretty close to them, though I never got one to pose for a photograph like the subject of your blog post has.

Maybe the ones you encountered weren’t hammy enough.

The red squirrels in my garden in Canada are not docile or timid. They are fiesty little redheads that think nothing of chasing off the larger grey squirrels. I can’t imagine coaxing one of my red squirrels into posing for one of these photos.

Maybe a little children’s Benadryl would improve their attitude!

These photos are so cute that I almost forget that I think of squirrels as “tree rats”. Both the red and grey squirrels are plentiful around here and quite brazen in their pursuit of food. When our bird feeder is empty, a squirrel will come up to our back yard sliding window and stare in at us! If s/he came floating over on an umbrella I might like her/him a bit more.

Agreed. My mother spent a fair amount of time and expense foiling their efforts to get into her bird feed. Some of her contraptions were hilarious! This one was my fave: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5A-7g-fl3g8

A good example of amazing squirrel gymnastics for sure, hilarious indeed. That squirrel is working hard for those dropped seeds.
