There’s something profound and unexpectedly soulful about the facial expressions of these masks, made by Latvian papier mâché artist, Mimmi. Her Etsy shop, MiesmesaBerni, is full of unique, believable-looking masks. While they look like they belong in the original 1973 movie Wicker Man, Mimmi’s motivation goes much deeper than costumes typically do:
“I fell in love with the idea to become someone that you are not able to be in this life time. Personally, I knew that I didnt want to be a superhero. I want to be something different, something from the old days. Most of us are wearing masks sometimes. For a better world – leave on the mask you need.”
I suspect not everyone would find the world improved if people walked around in these beautiful-yet-creepy things. They are nonetheless remarkable works of art, even if they do inspire some peculiar and menacing dreams.

That’s pretty much where I came out, too.

While I get the artisanal aspect and imagine some find beauty in these things I have but one word for a deep seated inner terror: Masks! I can’t even look at these which is a testament to how well executed they are.

Beloved is similarly opposed to masks. She’s the only reason I don’t have more of them. But as much as I love them, I still don’t think I would be brave enough to display one of these. I think I’d feel watched!

There is probably something we can do here involving reincarnation. If we could couple that with a smartphone app….maybe people would try a bit harder to improve their karma.

Love it! And the smartphone app idea made me laugh.

They are very soulful and expressive and exceptionally well-crafted but they are also profoundly creepy maybe because of how “real” they feel on some level. They give me the same heebie-jeebies as taxidermy.

I know what you mean, though it’s an improvement that they aren’t composed of dead animals.

Definitely. You’d have to go to Etsy to find masks made of actual animal faces, I’m sure. 😜

I seem to be the only one who wasn’t creeped out by these – what does that say about me I wonder?! (Please don’t feel obliged to answer that!!)
I LOVE the monkey one!

I’m sure it means you’re just brave and exceptionally mentally well balanced! (Or the complete opposite, but who am I to judge?)

I think they are beautiful. The photos don’t weird me out. I’m not sure how I would feel if I was exposed to some of them in person.

I, too, think they are beautiful. In style (if not material), they remind me a little of the Animals in Wicked, which we saw yesterday.
