Wicked Costumes!

WICKED

WICKED

Beloved and I took our wonderful 10-year-old niece to see WICKED on Broadway over the weekend, and I cannot get the costumes out of my head. We sprang for the really good seats – second row center – so we got a very close look at them, and everything down to the littlest detail was truly spectacular. I thought I’d share them for those of you who either haven’t seen it or who have the good sense not to go into debt for the actor-spittle seats. (F.Y.I., when we get tickets for ourselves, we are typically in the back with the unwashed hordes. We only pretend to be fancy once in a while. Happily, Miss Maggie was gratifyingly thrilled and enchanted, as were we, so it was money well spent.)

The costumes that so wowed us were conceived by lead costume designer Susan Hilferty, whose designs for WICKED won the coveted 2004 Tony for Best Costumes. The overall theme has best been described as “twisted Edwardian,” and it’s every bit as delicious as it sounds. And the colors! I’m not usually a huge fan of green, but this was gorgeous. I may become a green convert yet!

I was thrilled to discover that there’s a whole series of behind-the-scenes videos about the costumes on YouTube. Right up my alley!

I thought I’d use the Wordpress tiles gallery feature, so the photos are appearing a bit smaller than usual. However, if you click on them, you can view them in all their full-sized glory. Enjoy!

I will have to come back and watch the videos when I have the time. The stills are quite the showcase though. I have sadly not yet seen ‘Wicked’ yet. I would love to. Maybe a Good Witch will bless me with some tickets some time.

It was really fantastic. We loved everything about the show (except for the male co-star, who we all agreed was a little weak). Totally worth the money!

Some time I think we will have to take the financial plunge and take our four boys to a Broadway show. I have seen many shows in London’s West End so I have some insight into the Broadway experience but I would love to actually do it.

It really is great fun, and if you can stand sitting apart (in twos or threes), you could take a chance on TKTS with a pretty good likelihood of getting tickets. There’s also the half-price ticket sales during theater week every fall. Here’s the link. Give it some thought!

Yes, we would have to take our chances with the last minute ticket deals. We used to do that all the time in London but then there were just two of us to snag tickets for. Maybe next time we are on a trip to NYC for more than just the day we will give it a try. My oldest son went with school and saw Cinderella so he is the only one so far to have had the Broadway experience.

Yes, a LOT of green, I didn’t expect that. They are fun and curious to see.
