Canadian makeup artist Andrea Reed’s Instagram account, girlgreybeauty, is so full of gorgeous, unexpected face art, I actually squealed for joy when I came across it. Her work is much, much more upbeat than the makeup artist/photographer featured in last month’s “Artist Interrupted,” and more accessible (and wearable) than the makeup featured in “Drag Artist.” It’s just fun, beautiful, wonderfully creative makeup, and it made me instantly happy.
Although her photos include all kinds of makeup, it’s her lip work that really has me hypnotized. I certainly never expected to see Katsushika Hokusai’s famous painting, Great Wave Off Kanagawa, so beautifully depicted in makeup! There are hundreds of photos and different looks on her Instagram. Grab yourself a cup of coffee and spend an hour browsing her photos. It’s great inspiration!
In fact, I briefly toyed with the idea of attempting lip art myself, then I realized I possess only half the real estate that Reed has to work with. My Great Wave Off Kanagawa would be more like this:
By the way, for the next week, Beloved and I will be on vacation. While I will still be posting daily, the posts will be a bit shorter than usual. Also, Etsomnia™ will be taking the week off, but it’ll be back on the 14th, tanned and rested.
I hope everyone has a great week. I know I’m going to!

I love the lip art! What imagination. The bee on the lip is a little scary. I can see someone trying to swat it off her face. lol

Agreed, though I doubt that makeup is suitable for more than air kissing.

What amazing skill. I have very full lips so have a lot of space to work with but even so I apply regular lipstick like the Joker. No way could I accomplish anything approaching this. Have a wonderful week!

Wow. I find this thought provoking. I found the “artist interrupted” thought provoking as well but I didn’t post because my issues about violent images of women’s bodies are (mostly) my own to sort out and you were obviously deeply thoughtful about the post. My two cents were only worth a couple of pennies you might find in the parking lot.
You have posted a number of times about art that incorporates the body and I feel like those posts trigger something for me that I haven’t sorted out enough to articulate. But I love you for getting me closer to whatever that thing is.

And I love you for being you, and for being so honest and self aware about your reactions to things.

Hey, she’s here in Victoria – so why did I need a New Yorker to tell me about her?

A fair question! I’m guessing you don’t spend much time with the makeup artist set.
