René Gruau
René Gruau was a world-renowned fashion illustrator and painter. During the 1940s and 50s, he was the darling of the haute couture world, and his work appeared in nearly every major fashion publication of the age. His iconic style was so recognizable and au currant, he was also hired directly by the world’s most well-known and well-regarded designers, including Dior and Givenchy. His paintings manage to convey so much style with so few brushstrokes, there’s no mistaking his work. I’m especially intrigued by how it holds up, even nearly 80 years later.
Highly-collectible (for the obvious reasons), his paintings hang in museums all over the world, and Gruau is widely acknowledged as one of the great masters of the fashion illustration world.

I could not have told you his name but those illustrations were instantly recognizable. I really love the strong line work and the way it contrasts with the more chaotic elements of the art work. It’s that tension between the two that makes them really spark I think.

I felt the same. The images were definitely familiar, but I don’t think I ever knew the artist’s name before. I am in complete agreement with your assessment of the chaos and the bold strokes balancing each other out. So yummy!

I love these older illustrations. I had no idea what his name was. Thanks, Donna.

That’s funny that we’re all reacting to his work the same way. My brain clicked in with “Oh, that’s who that is!” when I found his work.
