I am sorry to say that today’s unbelievable artist is as elusive as he is talented. Unfortunately, I could only find the social media feeds for Christian Douglas, A.K.A. ChrisD, and he’s a man of few words. His work, though, speaks volumes.
Here’s what Douglas does. First of all, I should mention that by trade, he’s a tattooist from Brazil. However, his social media feed is just reels of his single-line drawings. He traces anything – cartoon, vintage photo, something torn out of a magazine – and without planning or ever lifting his marker, he creates the most stylish, simplistic-yet-evocative drawings I think I’ve ever seen.
There’s something magical about Douglas’s process. The way he chooses the order in which he traces objects, which details are rendered fairly faithfully and which are just crazy scribbles, and which are left out entirely is entirely fascinating. A friend said it was like jazz, but pleasant. LOL. And speaking of jazz, many of the pictures he decides to reproduce are of jazz musicians. Just marvelous stuff.
You can follow ChrisD on TikTok and Instagram. And if you find him anyplace else, please let me know. I need more!

I am mesmerized by the process and wowed by the confidence of his drawing. This is much more than the traditional exercise of “taking a line for a walk” because the choice of “scribble” is so well-considered.

Confidence is absolutely the right word. My artistic endeavors always include lots of erasing and correcting. I can’t imagine doing something so fraught with peril so casually.
