Radio Garden is maybe the best website I’ve ever seen. It’s a remarkably simple idea, but the concept is pure genius. Pulling from thousands of radio stations across the world that feature live internet streaming, Radio Garden puts them into context by placing them in their geographic locations on a Google-Earth-looking globe. You browse the map until you find a radio station you like and then just listen. If you like what you hear, you can follow the link to the radio station’s website. No software to install, no apps or memberships to buy, it’s free and available whenever you are.
The web app was designed by Dutch creative companies Studio Puckey (who have a very entertaining website themselves) and Studio Moniker in collaboration with the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision.
“The main idea is to help radio makers and listeners connect with distant cultures and re-connect with people from home and thousands of miles away.” –Jonathan Puckey on NPR.org
There are currently more than 8,000 radio stations participating, and after the site went viral in mid-December, calls have been pouring in from other stations asking to be added. Radio Garden also has a number of other features I haven’t yet explored, including history, jingles, and stories.
In addition to being fascinating to adults, I think this site would be a great way to get kids interested in geography. This could be such a useful tool for teachers.
I’m so thrilled to have found Radio Garden. It’s certainly going to be one of the websites I go to every day. Now, you’ll have to excuse me. I have an entire world of radio to explore!

It’s amazing. I’ve honestly had so much fun listening to places I’ve always wanted to go. Today, I spent most of the day listening to different countries around Africa, but tomorrow, I’m planning on exploring South America. So exciting!

Oh, right! I forgot to finish telling you about it. There’s quite a lot of Irish radio stations on there. Thought that might make you happy.
