We’re back from our world travels! Hope everyone had a great few weeks (and I hope you didn’t miss me too much…)
For my first new post in October (my favorite month), I thought it would be fun to take a look at Shay Rose (A.K.A. Crescent Shay), a nutty fashion and costume designer whose creations are just bonkers but always fun! Her designs go from glamorous to very, very silly, and she explains herself rather well in this quote from Instagram:
“…Making life-size worm on a string costumes – because sometimes projects are fancy ballgowns, and sometimes you just want to run around as a herd of worms on a string at 2am with your friends.”
For the 23-year-old maker, every day is an unconventional materials challenge. During Covid, she made a 12′-wide social distancing dress, she made a flapper dress out of pennies, she’s done a ballgown comprised of cell phone cases (complete with a trap door to get in and a wheeled frame so you can move around in the 150 lb. gown), and many, many more unexpected projects.

Welcome home! I somehow missed out on a creative gene, but I love these unconventional projects. My fave are the Nimona shoes from Crescent Shay’s Insta.

She’s so fun! I love how much she just delights in the fun of the challenge she’s presented to herself. She has real talent and skill on top of the creativity and seeing the joy in the absurd and kooky.

WOW. What impresses me the most is that her technical skills are fully developed–she’s clearly a professional level constructionist, draper, stitcher and more, which makes her creations all the more impressive.

I had the same thought! She’s great with taking her materials’ weights into account – something at which I full-on suck.
