Etsom·ni·a (/etˈsämnēə/), noun, 1. a sleep disorder caused by obsessive Etsy browsing. 2. The surprising arrival of weird handmade merchandise ordered when one is only half conscious. (True story.) 3. An excuse for me to be an obnoxious, snarky New Yorker once in a while.
I hope everyone had a nice holiday! Now that we’re past Thanksgiving, I have once again started to think about my holiday decor. I’m not really mobile yet, so I need to keep it simple. Since I need to forego outside decorations this year, I want my interior decor to be a little extra special.
We don’t in fact have a fireplace, so instead I decorate a low Art Deco bookcase and chest-height Mission Style stained glass china cabinet. The results are definitely festive, and fairly easy to set up and break down. I start at the back corners with the two decorative nutcrackers my sister-in-law gave me. I then add a couple of table-top stands featuring the ornaments which are too heavy to hang on the tree. Then I work around them, filling in the space with colored glassware and votive holders which I fill with small glass ornaments and little bells. I finish it all off with fairy lights and our stocking holders. The display always makes me happy (and thus far, the cat has left it all alone).

Mercury glass is so pretty–yes, what it does with light…!
Oooh, my kitties said definitely bring on that cute little swag and the fused glass ornaments! 😹

I’m a bit concerned that our house demon (cat) is going to get interested in our holiday decor. Thus far, she’s mostly ignored it, but I’m keeping a close eye on her…

We (because: me) have a 12′ tree that is decorated in 90% glass ornaments. It’s pure insanity but also: delightful. And after the youngest broke two ornaments in the process, we got a new broom this year! I also don’t really have a mantle but I decorate our waterfall buffet seasonally all year long, and like you, I have specific ob’jets that I always use. Although, I am toying with mixing it up this year. We’ll see. Hope your recovery is going smoothly!

Thank you for the well wishes! I love that you stick to mostly glass ornaments. I do, too, on the tree. However, when we do a real tree, I usually make sure the bottom 25% is predominantly non-breakable ornaments just in case the cat gets creative.

Choux Choux’s tail wagging is, occasionally, frightening. This year two ornaments were broken by the 21 year old on a ladder but honestly, in some ways that’s part of the fun.

My favorite souvenir when I’m traveling is to find a glass shop and buy an ornament. If packed properly, they travel well, don’t weigh much, and remind me every year of my trip. For that reason, I get very attached to the dumb things.

What a lovely selection of festive decor. I was especially drawn to all of the glass but decorating with glass in a house with three cats – one of whom is a kitten – is just asking for trouble.

I hear you! We got Goosie on 12/26 last year, and she started out very shy. By the time she was out of the bedroom and wandering the house, the decorations were away. I’m keeping my fingers crossed this year…
