Dancer Harper Watters is one of the most graceful humans I’ve ever seen. In addition to being in what appears to be perfect shape, this beautiful dancer turns movement into silk. His flawless, effortless-looking leaps and extensions seem super-human, and whatever kind of creature he is, I want to be one too. In addition to his epic ballet work, Watters is also well known for performing ballet and running – RUNNING, I TELL YOU – on treadmills in sky-high heels. I wish he’d be more protective of his ankles, but the videos are a ton of fun to watch.
Watters is a principal dancer with the Houston Ballet, and holds the distinction of being HB’s first gay black soloist. I’m sure getting there wasn’t easy, but I’m equally sure he made it look easy. He’s also the creators of a YouTube web series now in its 9th season called The Pre Show, which gives fun glimpses into the backstage lives of dancers.
You can (and should) follow the astonishing Harper Watters on his website and on YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok, you can watch The Pre Show on YouTube, and you can learn more about the dancer on the Houston Ballet website.

All of the choreographed dance is very impressive but what bowled me over was all the stuff done on high heels. Aside from the strength and athleticism, the control of balance is astounding to me. I am currently covered in bruises and hobbling about because I slipped on the kitchen floor while in bare feet. I would be in traction if I tried the moves he does like it’s no sweat.

I used to be able to run in heels. No more. Now I need to be carried around in a sedan chair by four strong young people if I’m wearing more than a modest wedge. So depressing.
