If you are a regular reader of this blog, first of all, thank you! Second, you are no doubt aware of how jazzed I get about good harmonies. Today, we’re checking out one of the most polished vocal groups I’ve ever heard. I should mention that when I am alone and feel like singing, I always start with The Wailin’ Jenny’s version of The Parting Glass. It’s glorious ear candy, and I love to switch back and forth between parts, just to know I still can.
The Canadian trio began in 2000 as a one-time thing, performing together at a guitar shop in Winnipeg. It was just supposed to be three singer/songwriters getting together for a jam session. But the audience’s response to their instant chemistry inspired the young singer/songwriters to join up and form the Wailin’ Jennys. Only one of the members eventually left the group, and she was replaced with a singer with a deeper alto, which further enhanced the group’s sound. The second song below, Pants, has become the Jennys’ most requested song. It was written by their sound engineer (who is also the partner of one of the band members) for their young twins.
You can follow the Wailin’ Jennys on their website and on YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook.
