Tomorrow marks the 56th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. While I firmly believe this history should be taught in schools, I don’t expect that will happen in my lifetime. Therefore, I thought we’d take a look at an outstanding documentary sponsored by The Center which explains, using interviews and archival footage, the history of the uprising.
I have had the good fortune to know personally a few of the iconic Stonewall Veterans, and I will forever be in their debt. No matter how the White House tries to erase our history, WE WILL NOT BE FORGOTTEN.
You can follow The Center on their website and on YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook.

The history of Stonewall and other events in LGBTQ+ history ought to be taught, deserves to be taught, needs to be taught in schools. Depressingly, however, I agree with you that it’s an unattainable hope for now. We should be teaching the history of all kinds of activism and fights for progress because that is what inspires people to keep fighting to make things better for everyone and improve society but, of course, too many sectors of society want the opposite of that. This, therefore, is another reason to be thankful for resources like the internet and to access content like this documentary so that people can access this important history independent of their education systems, families or communities.

I’m sure you saw, but NYC’s pride celebrations were interrupted by someone spraying bear spray at celebrants and two shootings near Stonewall. Our world is broken and moving backwards. We talk constantly about how to know when it’s time to leave the country, but I don’t want to leave. I want to help fix it. No concrete ideas on how, but still we stay and hope.

I actually only saw that after I had commented on your post. I was on a break from news while on vacation and am only just catching up now. You are absolutely correct in your assessment: broken and being dragged backwards. I hope we can change that trajectory.
