A Guide to Troubled Birds

“I will put you down as a soft maybe” – Matt Adrian

Avian artist Matt Adrian is know for his incredible, lifelike portraits of birds, but what makes them extra special are the artworks’ non sequitur titles. Under the name Mincing Mockingbird, Adrian posts his gorgeous paintings with titles that range from head scratchers to full on hilarity. According to the artist, the titles he gives his work are meant to compare “the purity of nature with the banality of modern human existence.”

When asked why he gave his beautiful paintings such bizarre titles, he had this to say:

“I’ve always loved art and writing equally and was getting bored titling my paintings “Parrot Number 2” or “Untitled.” Once I started adding the non sequitur titles, there seemed to be a bit of energy and/or tension between the painting and the title that I liked. So I kept at it.”

About two years ago when the Eldest and I were in CO for a medical check in, we found some greeting cards, including the greatest card I have ever purchased, by Mincing Mockingbird, that says “I would sell you to Satan for ONE CORN CHIP” which I bought and held for 6 months just to give it to the youngest for his birthday and there has never been a more fitting card for that child (adult with sense of humor).

I stock up on cards from the website constantly and the Eldest recently bought me the little book he produced. LOVE this artist so much!

Absolutely wonderful! The paintings are fantastic anyway but the titles really make me chuckle. This artist has a talent for painting and for humour.
