Collage artist Lauren Matsumoto is such an interesting person. Using vintage ephemera like rare wallpapers and film fragments, she layers each piece and each texture like sedimentary rock from bygone eras. Her pieces are then hand aged, painted, and generally tortured until they are the accomplished, fascinating works she meant them to be.
The artist defines herself as a painter exploring nature. Matsumoto’s use of a combination of traditional painting and collage creates an interesting dialogue between the two mediums. Birds are a common subject for her, and her fondness for the creatures comes from her childhood. She spent loads of time around birds of different species because her grandfather was a professional bird breeder. He gave her the gift of a love of nature that she carries with her still.
