Intimate Embroidery

Valentina Lobos

Chile-born Germany-based artist Valentina Lobos has done something I didn’t think possible. She’s made embroidery sexy. Well, sort of. Maybe intimate is a better word. During the initial Covid lockdown in 2020, Lobos decided she needed a project, so she began working on some very personal embroidery work. She decided to embroider the things she missed the most. Initially, her scenes showed people happily gathering in nature and in public parks and beaches. While working on this project, Lobos began to feel a kinship with the women throughout history and across cultures who had used this same medium to communicate and commemorate their ideas.

As time passed and Lobos’s skill with the needle grew, she began experimenting with her subjects, creating “diverse representations of love and companionship… all about the freedom to exist and love in your own way. The cushions have interesting textures and are meant to be touched.”

ou can see all of Valentina Lobos’s wonderful embroidery on her website and on Instagram.

Very sweet and charming. I imagine the portrait pieces make great gifts. I think the piece with all the nudes is fabulous and I also really like the snakes.
