Today, we are exploring the outstanding chainsaw carvings by sculptor Jim Haggart. It’s hard to believe, but Haggart is entirely self-trained AND he really only works on his art part time. He carves mostly on the weekends in a place called Pennings Orchard in the lovely town of Warwick, New York. Haggart says he drives out every weekend, climbs up on his mound of years’ accumulated sawdust, and gets to carving. The flying woodchips have been drawing in spectators and collectors for many years now.
According to Haggart, his only art training came in the form of the aimless doodling he did in his textbooks when he was supposed to be learning other subjects. Some people are just natural-born artists! When he started carving, his pieces were taller than he was, but over time, that scale of work began to take a toll on his body. So now, Haggart works in much smaller scale. I imagine the smaller carvings sell quicker, too.
You can visit Jim Haggart at his workshop at 109 Galloway Rd, Warwick, NY. You can also follow him on Instagram and Facebook, and you can buy his marvelous works on Etsy (sometimes) and Ebay (all the time).

The monsters are adorable and it blows my mind that he can create these sculptures with a chainsaw.

I can’t imagine having that much control over such a heavy tool!
