When it comes to art, I am rarely at a loss for words. I am no expert (at anything), but I know what I like and I know what art makes me feel, and I’m usually able to communicate something. Not this time. This time, I’m speechless. This is the gob-smacking almost-abstract art of Gabriele Serrini. Born in Pisa, base in Spain, this painter also seems to defy critics labels, so I’m glad it’s not just me. His work “transcends realism and abstract expressionism and pop art.” See? He’s got us all stumped.
I can honestly say that after spending a happy hour taking in his work, I will forever after recognize it. That’s no small feat! Serrini presents his equally-recognizable pop art subjects with his signature use of layers and textures and some of the most artful smearing I’ve ever seen. It’s as satisfying to watch him make his art as it is to behold the final pieces. After taking in the making-of TikToks below, please scroll all the way down to see his self portrait. It’s a hum dinger!
You can follow the amazing Gabriele Serrini on his website and on TikTok, Threads, Instagram, and Facebook.

Doesn’t this look like “Hey! I could do that!” No. Only kidding! But it is so cool.

I watched his making-of videos and thought that same thing. Then I realized how different mine would come out…

Wow! It really does defy categorization because they are recognizable portraits but with an abstract approach to their creation, a little bit pop art and a little bit of Pollock-type drip and splatter. I really like the vibrancy and the energy of the pieces and it was cool getting to see how that dynamic mark-making was achieved.

I deeply want one. Dumb, I know, but I do. Oh, well. Into our virtual gallery it goes…
