Today we’re looking at an organization that helps adults over 55 re-engage with making music. Encore is the nation’s largest choral arts program for older adults. The organization has more than 40 ensembles nationwide, and more than 1,500 singers participate in their choral music performances. In addition to the choirs, the organization has a few additional programs as well. First, there is a program called Encore ROCKS which focuses on singing rock and roll hits from the 1950s and beyond. Next, there is a program called Arts for Life which is directed at people who are experiencing early-to-mid-stage cognitive decline. And finally, though the choruses are audition free, they also offer something called Encore University which offers classes for singers with an interest in training their voices.

I absolutely love the idea of creative aging, and this organization seems like a particularly valuable resource for those who love music. I have had first-hand experiences with seniors in my life who were experiencing declines. When I put on their favorite music, it was like hitting the on switch. They were happier, more engaged, and started telling stories that the music brought to mind. Even people who don’t feel inclined to make music benefit from hearing the music of their youth.
