The 700-year-old Belgium village of Doel is scheduled to be demolished in the very near future. In the 1970’s, Doel became a target for demolition when it was decided that the Antwerp harbor needed to expand. The residents successfully held off the demo for decades, but in 2008, 100 riot police were sent to force their evacuation. It’s mostly a ghost town now, but as the residents moved out, artists from all over Europe have been moving in and painting the town.
The work is really incredible and totally worth looking at. I wish I had a way to go and see it in person. Seems like a fascinating place. Such a shame to tear it down.
