The Rise of the Machines

Last week, beloved and I took a walk around the 3D Print Design Show at Javitz Center. We wanted to get a look at what they had on display (and it was free). We were really just there to gawk, and every time someone tried to talk to us about their products (printers, filament, software, etc.) we made our excuses and kept walking. And then I caught sight of this jewelry, and it stopped me in my tracks.

Allegra Crespi and Martin Griswold started NVM Design with a fondness for classical jewelry design and in an interest in how technology could be used to better execute it. Their process is really intriguing:

“Our design was born out of our studio in Lower Manhattan and our pieces are printed in Midtown, then finished by our jewelers in the City’s historic Diamond District.”

Below is a peek at some of the beautiful pieces designed by the talented folks at NVM.

Aside from the beautiful jewelry by NVM Design, the other highlight of the show for us was when the organizers turned off the lights in the exhibit hall and put on a fashion show. We couldn’t get close enough to see very well, so we didn’t stay past the first few looks, but as we were walking away through the mostly darkened hall, we noticed that nearly every booth had a single light on – each of the booths had a 3D printer hard at work, and the glow and hum of the machines working by themselves was both beautiful and a little chilling. It really did feel like a glimpse of the future. Fun!

Perhaps being dense here, but what were the 3D printers doing?
