Happy Pride Month! I love June, and not just because it’s typically the first really summery weather we have in New York. Today, in honor of LGBT Pride, I’d like to explore some rainbow-hued art.
Quick story: Beloved’s father was a generous and wonderful man. He was always very kind to me and made me feel welcome from the first time I met him. Anyway, he was crazy for rainbows. Though definitely not the Pflag type, he nonetheless had rainbow bumper stickers on his car, rainbow wind-chimes outside his porch, the works. When we tried tactfully to explain why he kept getting honked at, he shrugged and said, “Who doesn’t like rainbows?” So there you go. Wisdom from George, Sr.
Let’s start with the rainbow-colored origami street art of Mademoiselle Maurice:

Kimsooja installation at the Palacio de Cristal, Parque del Retiro, Madrid. The windows of this 1800s greenhouse were covered with a special translucent film to create rainbows visible from inside and outside the structure

Clemens Habicht’s 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzle containing exactly 1,000 different colors arranged in the form of a CMYK gamut is available for pre-order from This Colossal’s shop.

John Breed leg rainbow installation for German shoe salon Breuninger last year. The work included 145 shoes and legs. More views here (totally worth a look)
And finally, this is a very colorful nutty-but-hypnotic music video for “Katachi” recorded by Shugo Tokumaru, with design and stop-motion animation by Kijek/Adamski:

my cat Big broke out of the house one night, first and only time ever, and was never seen again. there is a statue of st. francis that i pass everyday. he holds out a basket. one day i put a note in his basket asking if he could please tell me where my biggie was. when i returned an hour later a sun-shower occurred and st. francis was surrounded by a circular rainbow from the sunlight through the raindrops. i wish i could share it here. he was telling me big was at the Rainbow Bridge.

I love the wisdom of George Sr and I quite agree. I’m not sure I’ve ever met someone who doesn’t love rainbows. Could I trust someone who didn’t? My boys all bubble with excitement every time we see a rainbow, something they’ve inherited from me. Indeed not so much now but when he was tiny we used to refer to my youngest son as our “rainbow” baby as he was born so soon after the loss of another baby son so he was the joy and hope after that storm. Maybe that’s the wonderful thing about rainbows: they can represent so many positive things in life.
That music video was mesmerizing and impressive, I loved the origami street art and I’m coveting many of those other rainbow art works and installations.
Happy Pride month!

By the way, the rainbow baby idea is wonderful! What a great way to explain it.

I can’t take credit for it. It’s a commonly used symbol or expression in stillbirth support groups when dealing with pregnancy after a loss. It was a useful way to talk to my older sons about the new baby, however, quell their anxieties somewhat and for that reason it stuck for a while. I think it’s a great metaphor for emerging from any tumultuous period in life with renewed hope and joy.
