Last night, I woke up Beloved because I was watching the awesomely-funny Iliza Shlesinger and this bit came up. It’s hilarious. I promise. Watch it until the end. You will cry.
Note: Alas, YouTube took down the video. If you have Showtime, you can watch Iliza’s special “War Paint” and see the bit. In it, she brings her dog, Blanche, on stage while she jokes about an infamous ASPCA commercial, all the while advocating for animal adoption. During the bit, she holds the dog up while singing “Arms of the Angels.” The expression of pained martyrdom on the dog’s face is absolutely hysterical. If you have a way to see it, I really recommend it.
Here’s my personal connection to this joke. For many years, my friend and I used to own this song in karaoke. Seriously, we did it as a duet and we practiced, and we killed. Then the stupid SPCA put it under their crusty animals commercial, and now nobody wants to hear it. Thanks, SPCA.*
*I continue to support them, but I’m still bitter about the song.
