Russia native Salavat Fidai does magical things with pencils.

The son of two artists, he nonetheless decided to pursue a career in law. However, when he was laid off last year, he thought he’d explore his artistic roots instead. He has tried his hand at many different art forms, but his most recent obsession with pencils is by far his most successful to date. He carves the graphite in the pencils into tiny, perfect sculptures. You can even buy them on Etsy!

He’s also done some really fine photography, though he seems a little obsessed with pears. (Not a joke. Seriously, there’s a pear in almost all of his photos.)

And, to quote Art Fido, “Those who dare to fail miserably can achieve greatly. (JFK)”

And in case you’ve had enough of the pencil sculptures, he also does eensy reproductions of famous paintings. ON PUMPKIN SEEDS (and sometimes matchbook covers). Now, he’s just showing off.

I’ve seen some of his work somewhere (and it is annoying me that I can’t think where) and even looking through magnifiers at the pencil leads they seem impossibly tiny. I cannot imagine having the dexterity and precision to carve graphite even on a larger scale let alone so teeny weeny – and my eyes wouldn’t manage the task either. Incredible.

Get outta here! What amazing stuff. I am so intrigued that not only do people do these things, but that they even think of them in the first place.
