What if you spent every day looking for One Beautiful Thing?

Artist Mario Sorias, known for his hyper-realistic painted portraits in which he incorporates found objects, is exploring a new series I just had to share. He takes Spanish Golden Age painter Diego Velázquez‘s portraits of nobility and other historical figures and paints in his own surrealistic additions. Some of the modified portraits are then framed in ornate, jubilantly loony collections of small toys and other found objects, painted a single color. I’m sure it’s a very long process, but the finished pieces really are completely new works and so much fun to examine!

Those are fabulous! I love the wit, skill, the sheer craftiness of what he’s done with Velasquez’s portraits. Now I have an idea brewing of getting my kids to make additions to classic paintings….
