A few years ago, after many years of patrol, Beloved was moved from a regular police precinct to the Internal Affairs Bureau, the unit that investigates wrongdoing by police. Cops refer to IAB as the Rat Squad, so that’s when our slight obsession with rats began. Many of her co-workers have made the unflattering nickname their own, and quite a few have some kind of rat on their desk. I’m always on the lookout for the next great rat thing. Finding these illustrations was like hitting the motherlode!
These are the beautiful, fairy-tale-like paintings of Dutch artist Nadya Bonten-Slenders. Her dreamy paintings and drawings often feature rats, which, along with mice and rabbits, are the artist’s favorite animals. Many of her charming illustrations can be purchased on Etsy, so go check out her shop!

I love every one of them especially the one with them holding the moon and stars . How adorable, yet in actuality we scream if we see one in our house. I like to think of these as mice and not rats. Mice are cute, rats are ugly.

I know just what you mean. We would have the same reaction. But at least the illustrated rats are pretty!

When we were kids, my sister had a pet rat. He was awesome – cuddly, smart, loyal… Loved sitting on my shoulder to watch TV. I, on the other hand, had a hamster. Not cuddly, not smart, anything but loyal. Damn thing but me. Hard.
I’d rather be compared to a rat than a hamster any day. 😉

Hi, sweetie! That’s interesting. I’ve never had either, but I have heard good things about rats from the people who have them. The only vermin I really covet is this one:

I like the rat on the cat’s back. A visual example of peace and cooperation.

And we could all use some of that! Great observation!

I love these illustrations, especially the two little rats on the swing and the fireflies. The softness of the colors is so appealing, and the rats have such personality! (And, yes, I too was bit by a cute but nasty hamster… More than one, actually. I was a slow learner). I would love to have one of these rats in my house!!
