*(So Much Better Than Regular Fruit)

super

A lovely young singer I know posted this video on Facebook, and I was completely enthralled. This is Superfruit, a subset of the singers from Pentatonix, perhaps the best-know a capella group in the world right now. Today’s song also features vocals by Mary Lambert, the lovely singer in Mackelmore’s “Same Love” anthem from 2012.

This is a cover of “Rise,”a Katy Perry song with which I was not especially familiar. Perry’s version is very good, but in terms of sheer emotional impact, it can’t hold a candle to the cover. The original is very slick, and I think the slight over-producing reduces the song’s effectiveness.

Hope you enjoy this fantastic cover as much as I did!

  1. I know about Pentatonix courtesy of my oldest son who does Chorus at school. They are very good at the vocal layering and close harmony thing. I feel like I vaguely know the Katy Perry song but nothing about this video made me go “Oh yeah, that song” which is great since an effective cover ought to be doing something different with the material, don’t you think? I am not a fan of Katy Perry’s voice anyway so I am pretty certain in a side by side cola type taste test I would plump for this one. I will need to show it to Chorus son.
