Elena Shumilova
In these stressful days, I find myself drawn more and more to beautiful things that help me to find a moment of peace, and today’s work did just that for me. These are the stunning photos by photographer/architect/farmer Elena Shumilova. Through her lens, her subjects – her two small children and their pets – take on a charming, storybook air. They seem like magical creatures who know something we don’t (which is undoubtedly true). Her composition and use of light and nature are all wonderful, but it’s the feeling that her subjects are sharing a wonderful secret that really draws me in.
Prints can be purchased on her website. I hope you are as enchanted by these photos as I!

I agree! They’re very painterly.

These are definitely magical images and I’m struck by how idyllic their lives seem, how peaceful. We lived somewhere remote, rural and depopulated for a decade but my life wouldn’t have looked like this even if staged.

That made me laugh. It certainly is an idealized version of rural life, but also, we can’t tell who’s just been peed on, which dog just rolled in cow pats, etc. My admittedly limited experience of rural live left me convinced that the country is mostly made up of shit.

I must confess that I have been dung splattered and fallen in manure. That was not daily, however. Mud, on the other hand, was definitely daily.

I love these. I reared my kids in the country and wish I had beautiful photos like these to document the tender times. And yes, lots of, um, effluence. Is that the word I’m thinking of? But, the most useful “fact of life” my mother taught me is: Babies wash. Something I learned on my own: fugly mud boots rock.

I think you’re thinking of effluvium. And I love “babies wash.” That would be great printed on baby washcloths.

Yes. That could be the word. Start an etsy store with baby wash cloths. Hmmm.
