If you find yourself in the Dominican Republic town of La Vega this month, you should keep an eye out for the flamboyant “limping devils” who attack people with their vejigas, which are inflated animal’s bladders. (You read that right.)
Carnaval Vegano celebrates the African heritage that played a large role in shaping Dominican culture. As in many other cultures, Carnival is the Dominican Republic’s big pre-Lent blow-out. This year, the carnival takes place every Sunday during the month of February.
Animal bladders notwithstanding, the costumes worn during this festival are some of the most ornate, complex, and gorgeous I’ve ever seen. Being attacked with a bladder or two* is a small price to pay to see such a magnificently creative cultural display up close!
*I’m kidding. Please do not attack me with bladders.

I’m not so sure I like them, even aside from the animal bladder thingee but they sure are colorful and intricate. THANX for another interesting, informative, and beautiful post Donna. ~~dru~~

Indeed, but in such a gorgeous way. They look to me like comic book villains!
