Victoria Savostianova/Sun Inside Photography
A beautiful young friend of mine is expecting her first baby, so when I saw this, I immediately thought of her. (This one’s for you, T!)
Family photographer Victoria Savostianova was quite successful at taking traditional maternity and baby photos. A close friend who was expecting, model Natasha Davidenko Mokrousova, suggested something different. For her shoot, she said she wanted to be portrayed as a 1940s pinup. And the results were nothing short of spectacular. So spectacular, in fact, that if you search for “Victoria Savostianova” and “pinup,” you’ll get a whole lot of photos taken by other photographers in Savostianova’s style.
I remember how insecure I felt about my body when I was expecting my daughters. Pregnancy brings such enormous physical changes, and it’s easy to lose your confidence. I love that Savostianova brought pregnant sexy back!

These are such fun! I love that whole 1940s pinup look anyway so I approve it as a choice for a maternity shoot. I never had maternity photos taken in any of my pregnancies. I never had a bump at all until pretty late in my pregnancies as I tended to carry inwards – all squashed organs and breathing difficulties – and even when I did pop a bump I looked a bit like I had just eaten too many roast dinners and pies. When I brought my youngest son home from hospital, it transpired that some people who saw me everyday did not even know I was pregnant. So, yes, maternity photos of me would not have looked remotely this glamorous or fun.

Mmm. Pie… Sorry. I’m back.
I’ll bet your looks would really lend themselves to this style. Maybe you should have some non-pregnancy pinups taken!

They really do work. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that her model has the perfect retro look.

That is very true. She really was the perfect model for that!
