Igor Siwanowicz
Three years ago, I wrote about the incredible insect photography of Igor Siwanowicz. When I checked back in on him, I discovered he’s now moved on to microscopic photography, with similarly spectacular results. He’s using a laser-scanning microscope to capture even more amazing detail than in his earlier works.
For example, the photo above is the foot of a male Acilius sulcatus (diving beetle). This complex foot is what enables the beetle to walk on water, and Siwanowicz’s new method of photography captured it in glorious living color. In addition to being a nature photographer, Siwanowicz is a neurobiologist at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Ashburn, Virginia, which gives him access to some very exotic (and very tiny) creatures indeed.
“I first laid hands on my microscope only three years ago, when I changed fields. I used to work as a biochemist, but I decided that neurobiology was more in tune with my naturalist approach. Plus they have these cool toys: confocal laser-scanning microscopes.”
Seems like he’s having fun exploring his new world. I’m glad he’s bringing us along!

I’m not sure that I want to look at insect parts with my morning coffee, but they are beautiful.

Yes, we do. Sadly, most of us (and that includes me sometimes–but it does not include you Donna) don’t have our eyes open enough to see it.

For years, I let life get in the way of my appreciation of the world. Now that I’m awake, my goal is to help people appreciate the good stuff around them. Life is going to happen anyway. There’s nothing wrong with looking for the good.

I think what you’re doing is amazing. You’ve shown me lots of stuff that I would never have seen without you.
Also, I am starting to think about decorating my house. I have a decent eye for paintings and statues, but I am not really good with colour. Looking at paint swatches does nothing for me.
I did buy some original artwork when I was in Vietnam and I had it framed. I am going to pick it up today. Hopefully, it won’t be too long before I hang them up.

That’s lovely! Thank you.
If you want to send me pics of your art and furniture, I’d be happy to make some paint color suggestions. Color is my favorite thing! You can send it to donna@myonebeautifulthing.com. If you’d rather not, I won’t be offended…

I will definitely take you up on that offer. I just need time to make the place look a little better before I photograph it for you.
How is your new place by the way?

Teeny and fun! We love it, but we’ll be glad to be home when it’s over. It’s exactly the adventure I was hoping for.

Love this! I want to know what all the parts are! It’s both beautiful and educational (which really appeals to my inner nerd). Thank you… again! ❤

These are just absolutely stunning–and a reminder of how endlessly complex the world is, and how little we actually see of it. Thanks for the best thing I’ll see today!

These are incredible! I love insects anyway so to be able to see such a level of detail in these stunning images is quite a treat.

Man, I am CRAZY about these!!! Really gripping works! These all spark my imagination in the wildest ways. It’s almost as if they evoke thoughts of some fantasy world that is somehow rooted in reality.
It’s amazing experiencing a life that’s right under our noses. Reality is truly spectacular stuff.
