What if you spent every day looking for One Beautiful Thing?

Identical Strangers

Photographer François Brunelle has spent the last 25 years traveling the world looking for unrelated people who look like twins. He’s been remarkably successful! The photographer has found hundreds of doppelgängers since he began in 1999. He’s captured more than 250 pairs in 32 cities. That’s a lot! These days, facial recognition software makes the search a lot easier, but in 1999, all he had to rely upon was his own brain. How on earth does he retain all those faces well enough to realize he’d found their double?

According to a fascinating documentary by Origin, it is estimated that each of us have the same face as about 7 other people. Can you imagine? I certainly can’t.

You can follow Francois Brunelle on his website and on Instagram and Facebook. Also, I’ve posted the Origin documentary below the photos. Cool stuff!

Whoa! I’m sure that I don’t look at people close enough to notice the identical strangers out there!

There is a woman with the same name as I have AND THE SAME BIRTHDAY. The way we found that out is because our prescription plan keeps mixing us up. It’s been a years-long struggle and we finally had to write a letter to the president of the company pointing out that it’s a huge HIPPA violation. It was magically fixed after that, though there is still the occasional mixup. Bizarre. I was tempted to send her a birthday card, but decided that would be creepy.

On paper, the premise of this project seems creepy and also extremely challenging. However, seeing the photos, it is kind of sweet to see how these doppelganger strangers interact with each other, almost like their physical similarity creates an instant bond. I do feel sorry for the 6 other people who share my face. Ha ha!
