Breast Cancer Awareness

Totuma/Lifetime TV

Happy ( • )( • ) month! It’s breast cancer awareness month, and I wanted to find something elevating that would give a positive message about breast cancer. I also thought we should be reminded us to get checked… (Just scheduled mine)

The video short below uses common objects to represent breasts in all their forms, big and small, matched and mismatched, healthy and not, paired and flying solo.

Wishing everyone a good October. Don’t forget to schedule those mammograms!

Naysayer here but…anyway. I hate that something that is important: Screening for breast cancer; has become a marketing ploy to generate millions of dollars for everything from tshirts to coffee mugs to bullshit pens and stickers yogurt lids and ….to the exclusion of other reproductive cancers. The thing is, Mammograms haven’t changed since their inception, and we all know that it’s an unpleasant screening tool that we’ve made zero effort to improve because:women’s health. No one would agree to such screening for, say, testicular cancer.

Meanwhile, we have no consistent screening tools for, say Ovarian Cancer (necessary caveat: that’s the one I have). Even the CA125 bloodtest isn’t recommended for everyone and insurance won’t pay unless there is some other finding–and that’s for a SILENT DISEASE that is almost never caught before it’s “advanced.” So, we don’t get access to the single (not the best, but what we have) screening tool available until well past the early stages, since most don’t have any discernable symptoms and those are generally placed under “Diagnosis:Female” and her acquaintance “Menopause” until long after it has spread.

If HALF the damn money spent on pink shit was instead spent on funding robust studies/research into intimate cancers, we’d be way ahead. Also the fucking regime right now and canceling promising research and… yeah. I hate BC Awareness because it lets a system profit off suffering without actually DOING ANYTHING.

I adore you and the photos are cute, I’m just a cynic.

I adore your cynical self, and I took none of that personally. I agree that women’s health is woefully behind, and I would lay down in traffic if it would spare you your cancer. And I feel similarly about Pride Month and the big labels that support LGBTQIA+ folks only when it’s convenient who make money by slapping rainbows on merch in June. That said, I had repeatedly forgotten to schedule my mammo which was due last May, and it was only the inane “Breast Cancer Month” appearances in my social media that reminded me to finally make the stupid appointment. So maybe it’s not completely useless. And another reason for me to loathe the current timeline: our insurance will now only cover breast cancer screening every OTHER year. Not only are we not progressing, we’re actually going backwards… xoxo my beautiful friend

Fun visuals and a good reminder. I have to go every six months at the moment so I am actually scheduled for later this month.
