A few years ago, we were out in Cherry Grove, Fire Island (our favorite gaycation spot), and a very elderly man approached my wife, who was somewhat androgynously dressed and standing alone at the bar. He teetered up to her and asked whether she was a beautiful gay man or a beautiful gay woman. She gamely replied that she was a beautiful gay woman. He told her that she reminded him of Tony Curtis. She thanked him, and he toddled off again. He wasn’t wrong. She absolutely has Tony Curtis’s eyes. Lucky me!
These androgynous portraits by photographer Meg Allen immediately put me in mind of that story. This very talented San Francisco photographer’s work beautifully explores the butch aesthetic and what she calls female masculinity. Outside the binary indeed.
