Egg Beaters

hen 125-year-old Cornwall resident Nicola Congdon knits tank tops for chickens. You read that right.

Battery chickens (so called because their cages are lined up in rows like batteries) are the major breed used for commercial egg-laying. When they are retired, because of the confined and unnatural life they’ve lived, they are essentially featherless and unable to adapt to the colder temperatures common in England.

“The tank tops are also something really different that provide some fun for the chickens. They keep them warm and makes the chickens easy to identify.”

I’m fairly certain the hens don’t give a flightless you-know-what about what wife beater (egg beater?) they’re wearing, but at least they’re warm.

When the story hit the news a few months ago, Congdon began receiving special requests for hen sweaters. But instead of selling them and keeping the profits, all the proceeds go directly to Project Primrose, an organization that serves orphans with AIDS in South Africa. This is an exceptional young person!

If you find yourself needing more chicken pictures, check out my 2014 post “Cheesecake Chick(en) Pics.”

That’s just silly. But, hey, whatever flips your omelet.

What a wonderfully eccentric but thoughtful thing to do and I love that the act benefits the chickens and another charity too. It reminds me of that group a few years ago who made the jumpers for penguins who had, I think, been caught up in an oil spill.

This picture always reminds me of the crows in Dumbo.

These hens look great. Usually this yarn looks so awful on anything or anybody else. They really seem to enjoy it.
