“Doris at Crooked Island” Janis Fitch

Cows on the beach sounds like a really terrible cocktail, but it is nonetheless a pretty cute idea for a series of paintings. This is the quirky work of painter Janis Fitch. Why cows, you may ask?

“Cows often find their way into my work. I saw them frequently while living in Southeastern Pennsylvania. But after 30 plus years as a Pennsylvania artist, I’m now a Florida artist and my cows are going to show up among the white sands and palm trees of the Emerald Coast.”

Whatever the reason for their incongruous appearance on the (painted) beaches of Florida, I find them oddly charming.

I’m from south central PA, a place loaded with these beautiful Holstein cows. Love seeing them for real and for surreal. Great find!

Love these cows. I’m from Wisconsin so they look right at home to me. 😊

Brilliant! I do wonder though why all the cows are Friesans. I would love to see a Highland cow (my favourite) sweltering in the sunshine or a Jersey strutting her stuff on the boardwalk.

There is something irreverent about this. I like that something.

Donna, Love it! I am going to flick it on to my friend who is a dairy farmer. I have used this as inspiration for post #66 on You Inspire Me scheduled for the Jan 3rd. Hope you have a lovely Christmas Break and wishing you a Happy New Year!

I just came upon this by accident- thanks! So glad you like my work! I recently finished a small ( so far) series of cows I found in Colorado-I think they’re called “Black Baldies”!!!-that will be in a show at the Cocco and Salem Gallery in Key West on Feb 28. Still love to do Holsteins the most, though.
