Birdhouse with a working solar-powered water feature! Wonder what the property taxes are on this thing… By MidCenturyWoodShop

Researching last week’s Etsomnia™ post, I kept coming across amazing birdhouses, and I didn’t think it was right to keep them to myself. Sometimes, when hunting for Etsy uglies, I forget that the site really is full of profoundly-talented people. I honestly can’t remember what I did for fun (in the middle of the night) before I discovered the site!

Some of these are so beautiful, I’d be happy to live in them! They’d all make great gifts. There’s even a seller who will make a birdhouse replica from a photo. That’s truly the perfect gift for a housewarming!

Note 1: Many thanks to seller Suzanne Wolf of  BirdHousesofNewEng, the maker of the custom birdhouses linked in the previous paragraph. She informed me that unless a birdhouse is constructed of wood of at least 3/4″ on all exterior sides, the birds can sicken and possibly die from exposure to excessive heat during nesting time and freezing temperatures during roosting time.

Note 2: Turns out there’s more of a debate about what makes a safe birdhouse than I understood. Beth from MikeMerrittArt clued me in on the other side of the birdhouse question. She also gave me some good information, which can be seen here.

These are amazing! I like the green men ones but wonder if the faces would put off the birds! Very creative.

I guess I never realized the thickness of the wood had anything to do with how warm/cold the birds were. So interesting.

The designs of these are all very cool indeed (and I do hope that most makers construct them in a way that is lovely for the birds and not detrimental). I have several bird feeders in the garden and am considering a bird bath next. For now, however, our bird visitors will just have to covet these custom houses.
