Though mommy would never say who her daddy was, Beatrice still had her suspicions…

Et·som·ni·a (/etˈsämnēə/), noun, 1. a sleep disorder caused by obsessive Etsy browsing. 2. The surprising arrival of weird handmade merchandise ordered when one is only half conscious. (True story.) 3. An excuse for me to be an obnoxious, snarky New Yorker once per week.

I finally managed to watch the movie “Water for Elephants” this week. I loved the book, and I thought the movie was quite well done. Since watching it put me in the mood for elephant stuff, I headed off to Etsy to see what I could turn up.

I have concluded that Elephants are a little like pizza. Even when they’re bad, they’re still kind of okay. And on Etsy, most of the elephant-related stuff I found was positively adorable! Mostly. (I know I keep doing that to you, but that’s the last time. I promise. Maybe.) Elephants are really popular on Etsy, and I found plenty of familiar elephant references from  Dumbo to Dali and from Babar to Ganesha. All in all, I had a really great time checking out the costumes and statement jewelry and housewares and baby stuff. And, you know, other things.

  5. The wooden elephant face with the truncheon nose reminded me, very worryingly, of Clockwork Orange. Judder.

  6. “Knit and run” is indeed a great line. And I couldn’t figure out for several minutes WTF was going on with Kimmie . . .

  7. On a positive note…the elephant poncho would be a great choice for someone who has to wear a snowsuit under their Hallowe’en costume because, where they live, it’s winter by October 31.
