Award-winning photographer Robert Trachtenberg is redefining masculinity, using well-known actors, comedians, and other male icons, often accompanied by their canine best friends. In his book “Red-Blooded American Male,” the photographer explores – and exploits – the self-deprecating, silly side of luminaries like Jerry Seinfeld, Jimmy Fallon, and my favorite, Neil Patrick Harris. Trachtenberg devises clever, ludicrous scenarios for his muses, scenes that make us go ha-ha-ha-hmmm.
I love how generous the photos’ subjects are, how unafraid they are to make themselves ridiculous. The project has made me like all of them as people even more than I did before. At once a tribute and a send-up, Trachtenberg’s work is an irreverent homage to male icons, both famous and infamous. I hope you find them as funny and admirable and entertaining as I do!

These are all great! The photographs are striking simply as portraits – the composition and handling of lighting is stellar in each case – but thematically I love the irreverence and the wit combined with being thought-provoking. Just the other evening, over dinner, I was discussing toxic masculinity with my sons and how I wish the media would do more to step away from stereotypes of male behaviour and representations of masculinity. This series of images is the perfect counterpoint to the type of imagery I was railing against.

I love that you talk to your kids about that stuff. They are going to be stellar adults!

I hope so. We always have “big” conversations and discussions at the dinner table. A year or so ago, my 11 year old had a friend staying for dinner and he pleaded, “Can we please not talk about social justice tonight?” Ha ha!
