It is a rare thing when a student film is so beautifully made that it garners an Oscar nomination (and a whole lot of other nominations besides), but “Head Over Heels” is just such a film.

Graduate animation student Timothy Reckart’s stop-motion animated short about a couple whose relationship is falling apart is deftly told, beautifully executed, and a delight to watch. His story is told without words, and really, you don’t miss them. The relationship’s disintegration is represented by the fact that the pair live on literal opposite ends of their world. One lives on the floor and the other on the ceiling.

I’ve watched it three times, and I’m not done. As much as I have loved other stop-motion films, this might have unseated the others as my favorite. Hope it speaks to you as it did to me.

Thanks for bringing this short movie to my attention. It’s wonderful. It’s a really touching metaphor.

How have I not heard of this? Oh, Donna–it is such a wonderful little film. Although…..Oscar nomination?? Not exactly a little film, but still…..It is most definitely OBT.

Reminds me of the idea behind the 2012 movie Upside Down ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upside_Down_%28film%29 ), only far shorter and much better executed.
