I still find myself with “something in my eye” when same-sex couples appear on national commercials as just folks. It’s a great time to be alive. It gives me hope for our children’s future and the future of their children. It renews (a bit) my faith in the people of this country and their ability to evolve, albeit slowly. I’m not talking about the people who’ve always had gay friends, I’m not talking about the generous, liberal-state, live-and-let live types. You already know I love you. No, I’m talking about regular, salt-of-the-earth flat staters. I’m talking about people who grew up in areas where same-sex relationships were reviled and railed against. These people are letting their better natures come out, so to speak, in favor of human rights.
I know there are lots of people out there who let their hatred or fear of people who are different from them define how they act (and vote), but their number is finally, gradually going down.
And so it is with great joy and a slight sense of giddy disorientation that I present Chobani’s national commercial featuring just folks. I’m so glad they make such a good product, because I’m going to be eating it for the rest of my life.
Note: I don’t love that Chobani aired a commercial with naked people (of whatever gender) in a bed-type situation on Nickelodeon during prime time. Love the commercial, just think the buy could have been handled more sensitively.
