What if you spent every day looking for One Beautiful Thing?

Etsomnia™ 133: Style…ish

Q. What color are those shorts?
A. Camel Taupe (If the joke doesn’t hit you, try saying it aloud)

Et·som·ni·a (/etˈsämnēə/), noun, 1. a sleep disorder caused by obsessive Etsy browsing. 2. The surprising arrival of weird handmade merchandise ordered when one is only half conscious. (True story.) 3. An excuse for me to be an obnoxious, snarky New Yorker once per week.

Often, I come across Etsy items during my Etsomnia (and regular shopping) searches that feature such hilarious photos, I can’t resist the urge to bookmark them. Many of the items aren’t that bad, but the way they’re photographed makes turns them into tragedies. Today, we celebrate the… uh… creative photographers and stylists who are trying a little too hard, and missing the mark by a mile.

When you ask that cousin to model your new purse design, you get what you get…

“Maaahm, Claude Rains is pulling my hair again…” (Kids, ask your grandparents what that means.

Hey, Vlad, does your brother still have that tank in his garage? (F.Y.I., the listing was for the purse.)

Fringed jacked selling 101: 1. window facing a wall, 2. cheap panties, 3. gogo boots, 4. underage smoker with dead eyes.

Fun fact: In some of the more folicle-prone regions, hair net rules for kitchen workers require covering the entire face.

Introducing Etsy’s newest scent, White Privilege.

“What’s your wedding theme?”
“Cirrhosis. And beige.”

Good… Now lean back… a little more… DAMNIT, CLAUS, WE LOST ANOTHER ONE.

I wish I had more time for yoga, but the darned cat makeup takes so long…

Q: How are we going to sell these macrame owls?
A: Stick it on Melania Trump.

  1. What were they thinking? The Invisible Man one must have taken a lot of effort to create and yet the outcome is dreadful. Sometimes less is more. Which actually needs to be enshrined in Etsy law. Your last caption made me bellow with laughter.

  2. Gaahhhhh! Beauty might be in the eye of the beholder, but these…..just ghastly. I am truly wishing I could unsee that fringe jacket tableau.

  3. When I read your comment below the smoker in the fringe jacket I laughed so hard that I spilled some of my coffee. I am not familiar with ETSY (outside of your posts) but, does that mean people are modeling jackets (in this case) in their underwear? I guess sex sells….but dead eyes do not.

    • Thank you very much for the near-spit-take! Etsy really is a remarkable website with some fantastic items. I don’t ever mean to give it a bad name. However, it’s true that people get a little desperate to get their merchandise to stand out from the crowd.

  8. This lovely post made me feel better about my Etsy listings, gave a name to my affliction (Etsomnia) and made me giggle. Thanks for making my bead better is three unexpected ways!

  10. This is awesome, and I thought I was the only one who was critical. I am crazy over my photos and try so hard, I went from craigslist to marketing because I could see how trashy my photos were. Sell a product, and keep the art exhibit to yourself… Also I think liam Neason is looking for the girl in the fringe jacket…
